SpEd and pre-school teacher

I just met a new friend she is a SpEd and pre-school teacher. She works an institution that teaches physically and mentally handicapped kids. I was surprised when I learned what her work was. There are few people who choose to do what she does. Helping what society considered useless. Investing her time and effort for kids has very little chance of succeeding by the world’s standard. But that what makes her work great! It is so counter cultural! In this generation where physical beauty and health is a premium, the handicapped are placed in the unwanted list. What struck me with her work was she reminded me of the parable of the Lost Sheep and the Lost Coin in the Bible. It shows Jesus’ uncalculating love for us. The Good Shepherd leaves the 99 to seek the 1 lost. He risks the 99 being stolen or eaten by wolves to find the lost sheep. He throws caution to the air. And the woman, who lost her coin, sweeps the whole house and gave a party after finding. If think about it, it is really kind of crazy to giving party to a coin, only people in the mental institution do that. Also think how impractical spending money to give a party for a single coin, the cost of the party is way more than the value of the coin! But that what my friends remind me, she chose to serve these people who will be normal. They won’t be engineers, doctors or lawyers. But still she chose to serve them. She told me that she teaches from 2 to 4 kids per class. Most of us will think of that as a waste of time. We modern people always think more is better, we focus more on quantity than quality. But that what makes her special. It takes a lot of dedication and selflessness to do what she does. She don’t calculate like the rest of us. Our world has become a cold world. We have become impersonal too each other. Many of us think God loves humanity but not us, which is contrary to the truth. People like her reminds us bit most of all reflects God’s personal love for each and one of us. That God does not calculate or look at us as an investment! That He is only good to those who he can use! God don’t need us to help him by the way, He chose that we help him. I hope more people be like my friend. She serves a light to our darken world. That there are still people who believe in personal love can change lives.

Sunday Afternoon

Last Sunday I went with 2 sisters to visit the houses of poor families near our area. I always enjoy going house to house and visiting and talking with the poor. They always make me realize how much of a wuss and complainer I am to God. Hearing their problems makes me looks selfish, and I thank them for making me realize that. After more than 3 years of serving the poor, they still break my heart when I hear about their struggles. Just seeing their houses already grieves me. No human should live in those conditions. But the reality is that there is poverty. And we must do something about it. After 2 hours of walking we went home. I said to myself that I should practice more gratitude towards God for his blessings and stop acting like a sissy.

Ash Wednesday

Two days ago was Ash Wednesday. It is the start of the season of Lent. It is a Catholic tradition that ashes are put on our forehead in a form of a cross. It reminds us that from dust we came and from dust we shall end. Lent is a season of not only of meditating but also participating in the passion of Christ. It is a time of cleansing oneself from our attachment to sin.

I was kind a bit worried last weekend if I will have a good start of Lent. I have been so self-centered and worldly these past few weeks that I thought I won’t be able to get back to God before Lent. Praise be to God that the grace came just in time. During Ash Wednesday we Catholics are ask to do 3 things, prayer, penance and almsgiving. So last Wednesday I was able to join the sisters to give medicine to the poor in the morning, which felt great. I always enjoy giving out medicine, maybe because I know that even in a little way that those sick people will feel better even if for some time. Bringing healing to the suffering even though how small is fulfilling. I also fasted, which I have not done for a long time. I ate 2 cookies for breakfast, ate a lot at lunch and waited for dinner. By 5 pm I was so hungry and restless. I ate 2 piece of bread and some fish. Man was I still hungry after that meal. I was restless and the only thing going in my mind was food. I took this opportunity to empathize to the poor who have nothing to eat. I joined my hunger with their hunger. I observe my reactions to hunger. I could not think straight, my mind was just saying food, food and food. I was also felt a little bit weak and very impatient. As I observe myself I realize why the poor act the way they do! It made me realize to be more compassionate to them specially when they act a little bit crazy. Hunger can do a lot to people, one of that is not think straight and be grumpy. So I said to myself to not to easily judge the poor who are grumpy and a little bit nutty, maybe they just not have ate for days.

I think fasting is a great practice. It helps us be more understanding and compassionate to the poor and suffering. Fasting can lead us to charity.
