Humility a forgotten virtue?

“Humility is not thinking less of yourself but thinking of yourself less.”

The word humility comes from the Latin, humus, which means ground or soil, referring to the state of being lowly.

I love humble people. They are fun to be with. I always have a good conversation with them. They seldom talk about themselves and have an open-mindedness about the things of this world. They are also the most realistic person I ever met. As Saint Teresa of Avila once said, humility is truth. Humble people know their limitations but also acknowledge the awesome power of God.

Humble people put all their eggs on God’s basket. All their trust is in Him.

"Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven" (Matthew 5:3).

I was reading a book about Mother Teresa last night and I came across her guidelines to her religious sisters. I believe these guidelines also apply to us Christians.

1. Speak as little as possible about yourself.
2. Take care of one’s personal matters
3. Avoid curiosity
4. Do not meddle in the affairs of others
5. Accept contradictions with great humor
6. Do not focus on the faults of others
7. Accept reproach even if undeserved
8. Yield to the will of others
9. Accept insults and abuses
10. Accept the feeling uncared for, forgotten, despised
11. Be courteous and sensitive even if someone provokes you
12. Do not try to be admired and loved
13. Do not hide behind one’s own dignity
14. Yield in argument even if one is right
15. Always choose what is most difficult

Mother Teresa’s Spirit of humility summed up in her own world: “I am a tiny bit of pencil in God’s hand to write what He wants”
